Meet Mel, our Lecturer in Banking and Finance, Level 6 Year Tutor and Employability Lead.

She is here to support your journey in Finance and Economics from the very beginning.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

I’m often described as forthright, someone who communicates directly and honestly, values transparency and integrity, I’d totally agree!

I’d describe myself as a happy person, that’s positive, upbeat, and always looking for the bright side.

I’d say I’m chatty, I enjoy good conversation, connecting with others, and bringing energy.

What areas of Finance and Economics are you most passionate about?

I am particularly passionate about teaching financial planning, as I believe it gives essential life skills that not only empower individuals in their personal lives but also open doors to rewarding careers in the financial services industry.

I find great value in helping students understand the importance of budgeting, goal setting, and retirement planning, as these are important elements that contribute to long-term financial wellbeing.

Additionally, the role of protection insurance in reducing financial risk, which is often overlooked but critical in building a resilient financial plan.

Sharing this knowledge with learners and seeing them apply it both personally and professionally is incredibly fulfilling, and it reinforces my commitment to making financial education both practical and impactful.

What advice would you give to current students?

My advice to current students is to be in the room physically and mentally.

Show up, engage, and make the most of every opportunity to learn. Contribute actively during tutorials, ask questions, and be curious about the subject matter. The more you practice, the more confident and capable you’ll become.

And above all, demonstrate professionalism in everything you do whether it’s how you communicate, manage your time, or collaborate with others. These habits will not only support your academic success but also prepare you for a successful career.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching for me is building rapport with students, which helps them feel connected and part of the cohort. I feel it is important to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment, this allows students to engage more confidently.

I enjoy witnessing those “light bulb moments” when a concept suddenly clicks. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see students begin to develop their own ideas, explore their interests, and shape their career paths.

Teaching also gives me the opportunity to motivate and inspire students to achieve more not just academically, but in their personal growth and professional aspirations.

Fun fact about yourself

Outside of teaching, I enjoy walking, travelling, and puzzles, anything that keeps my mind active. I enjoy open water swimming, but only in the colder months… I have a fear of frogs, so cold waters are frog free!
