STRIVE Programme: Unlock Your Potential

STRIVE is a dynamic programme designed to help students thrive at university. Through engaging workshops and activities, you’ll build key skills for personal growth, academic success, and career readiness, plus earn Rise points that can convert into extra credits.

To help students gain a real insight into the STRIVE programme, below is an interview with our final year student Anjaleen Khan.

How did you find out about the STRIVE programme?

During the lecture shout for first-year students, I was introduced to the STRIVE programme and found the mentoring scheme particularly appealing. It sounds like a great opportunity to receive personalised support while developing valuable skills for university and beyond

What were the benefits of the programme for yourself?

I attended several sessions throughout the programme, including inspiring talks from guest speakers and engaging motivational speeches. I also had the opportunity to speak with a group of mentors, which was a valuable and an encouraging experience.

How did you find the STRIVE mentoring programme?

It was a great experience overall—really supportive and encouraging. I had someone I could talk to openly, share my thoughts with, and who offered genuine support throughout. I also received plenty of useful tips and advice, especially around applications and processes, which helped build my confidence.

What advice would you give to students on the STRIVE programme?

STRIVE has been incredibly helpful in navigating university life and planning for the future. I was personally mentored by someone from Deloitte, and the support I received was tailored to my individual needs. The programme is fantastic for networking you meet a wide range of people and learn so much from their experiences. It really encourages you to take meaningful steps and think about what comes next. I would definitely recommend STRIVE to students in both their first and second year.

How did you secure your internship?

BNY University advertised the opportunity, and I decided to get involved. I reached out to my mentor for support, especially with questions about how to apply and complete my CV. She helped me tailor it to align with the values and principles of BNY, which made a big difference.

I also had a competency-based interview, and through my mentor, I learned about the STAR interview technique. She provided examples, explained what kinds of questions might come up, and guided me through the preparation process. Her support really helped build my confidence, I felt great going into the interview, and I developed a strong connection with her throughout.

I want to go back to BNY because I really enjoyed it there.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Never say no to new opportunities, challenge yourself and go for it. The STRIVE programme is amazing; it gives you a real head start and is incredibly helpful. The team puts so much effort into the events, creating spaces where you can explore, grow, and develop both personally and professionally.

My advice for first-year students is to get involved early. Starting now will make a big difference by the time you reach your third year.

Always give your best effort, even in your first year. Join extracurricular activities and be reliable, when people see your commitment, they’ll start reaching out to you with exciting opportunities.
